AM I A MONSTER?

I fully understand how terrible the situation in Afghanistan is for most of the women and girls, and for many of the men who are now there. All of whom now fear for their lives.

However, I can not shake the nagging thought that all of it, any political situation anywhere in the world, here, Russia, China, anywhere, means nothing when placed in the context of what is now taking place because of what we have done to our climate.

Yes, any humanitarian crisis is a terrible thing, but as of this day forward we are all in a humanitarian crisis. A crisis borne of our greed and our insane unwillingness to believe the dire warnings from science that we have heard since 1965. Now, it is pretty much too late. There is still a slim chance that climate change can be reversed. Very slim. I have to think, judging by the rampant ignorance now pervasive here, and all over the industrialized world, that humans are incapable of acting in a way that can accomplish this huge task. We are awash in a crisis of sheer stupidity. A stupidity that, for some unfathomable reason, has us believing that nature and the planet can withstand the onslaught of its rape by humanity forever.

So, while I understand the constant drumbeat of news from Afghanistan, I have to wonder why all the extreme weather phenomena; the hurricanes, the intolerable heat, the wildfires, the melting glaciers, the rising and warming oceans, aren’t the lead story in every news program all over the world?

The rainforest — the Earth’s lungs — is being cut down, the polar ice cap is melting, one hundred twenty one degrees heat in Canada…Hurricane Ida is ravaging New Orleans…Extreme weather all over the globe is destroying humanity’s very ability to exist. Is this not the most important story of all? Why are we fixating on anything else?

Yes, people are dying in Afghanistan, but shouldn’t all our deaths by our own hands be the only story we must do something about?
